Who hasn’t heard the story of David and Goliath? David: shepherd boy turned giant-slayer. But before he became known throughout Judea, all of Israel, and around the world as a mighty man of valor for his most courageous and noble battle in the valley of Elah, he was a just a boy, the youngest of eight sons, and apparently, the least important in his father’s eyes.
The year was 1020 BC, and Saul, Israel’s king elect at the time, had lost favor with God and the people of Israel.
In chapter 16 of Samuel, God has grown weary of Samuel the prophet’s grief over Saul’s demise. So the Lord instructed Samuel to go to Bethlehem, where God would show him His next choice for king.
But Jesse, David’s father, called only seven of his sons before Samuel, completely overlooking or forgetting about his youngest son David, who was out tending to the family sheep.
What’s up with that?
Why would Jesse deprive his youngest son the life-event of a lifetime – that being to meet the most influential and important person ever to visit their home? Did he not want his youngest son to witness the most exciting event in their family’s lifetime, the anointing of one of his brothers as the next king of Israel?
To those that know this story – it really doesn’t matter what was going through Jesse’s mind as to why he overlooked young David.
What matters is that God knew well in advance who He had in mind for the job and was patient with Jesse through the entire Parade of Sons – until – His choice, God’s pick was eventually called up.
Your luck could change in an instant. Your tomorrow may look nothing like your today. Until this IS the case, stay faithful and keep watching over those God has ALREADY entrusted to you.
